A Different Take on Scaling Your Design

I just got back from a trip to Europe. I had a great trip in spite of some pretty serious bad luck that involved a failed hard disk and two root canals (yeah, they got the wrong tooth first!). This got me thinking about backup software (the failed hard drive more than the root canals) and that led me to Mozy.com. For five bucks a month, they give you unlimited remote backup. Or if you just want to try it out, you can get 2GB for free. Really cool! The software is decent. It’s easy to use, but I had to manually start the service for some reason. Well, the barrier to entry for remote backup has never been this low. You’re out of excuses, self (and readers).
The smart (alecky?) guys at 37 signals have an interesting post in which they share their perspective the value of personas in the software design process. More interesting than the thoughts of the 37 signals guys (who come down on the side against personas) is the conversation that ensues in the comments section.
How did I miss these guys? BTW, most stuff comes with source (including some sweet sl1.0 components).
Somehow Venn diagrams weren’t ever this fun in high school…
Silverlight 1.0 has a pretty heavy JavaScript dependency. You may have run into some of the subtle differences between browsers already. To help you work you way through the JavaScript implementation weeds, the folks on the JScript team at Microsoft have documented deviations between the various implementations (relative to the ECMAScript specification). Get the doc here and the team’s blog post here.
So no updates for a while. Sorry…I’ve had a really busy month or so, and I still have couple of busy weeks left. It’s been fun though. I’ve been traveling a lot, including two Remix events: one in the UK and one in China (best of luck with that second link!).
Both trips were amazing and at both, I had a chance to share a little bit about what I’ve learned about workflow in the year or so since I left Microsoft. The, last week, Adam Kinney of Channel9 fame gave me a chance to talk a little bit about this stuff on camera. I think I promised a post about workflow and the Integrator role a while ago–for now, the channel9 video will have to do.
Also, did you know that Channel 9 had podcasts? Anyway, I’ll try to keep things a little more current around here. In the meantime, you see can me in China below–what an amazing trip!. And then Chad’s got a picture of me in the UK on his blog. That’s a new pose for me…I didn’t realize I did that in pictures, but I think I’m on to something.
